Home versus School

August 26, 2011 by Amy Cesario

First Day of School!

School started a few days ago for many Denver Metro Area kids and schools have always been an important decision when purchasing a home. I have had single people without children tell me they needed to purchase in a great school district. I would ask if they were planning to have or adopt children and most times their answer was, “no, I want to be sure to be able to sell their property in a few years.” In their mind, this was one of their top priorities.

Over the past few years, I’ve noticed people just won’t consider looking in some school districts because they are thinking of being in one home for ten years or longer as opposed to 5 years or less, which was a trend in the early 2000’s.

In the State of Colorado, Real Estate agents are not allowed “steer” or give advice according to an individual school or a school district. They client is required to do their own homework if this is a priority. Here is a websites we are able to refer people to, to help them make an informed decision: http://www.greatschools.org

If you are not familiar with the metro area school districts, a few other things to consider:

  • Does the district have “Open Enrollment”?
  • What type of leaning your child needs.
  • What type of environment you want your kids to learn in.

I believe it is important to think long term when purchasing a property but I also know that schools reputations change. I believe the most important thing in any child’s learning is the parents participation. If you are a hands on parent be sure to visit the school so you know you are comfortable with their philosophies. Talk to the administrators and the teachers. Is it a community you want to be a part of.

I know for sure the Denver Public Schools, Douglas County, Jefferson County, and Cherry Creek School districts encourage parents to come in for visits.  All you have to do is call and make an appointment.

We have very diverse schools in the metro area and I am sure you will be able to find the one right for your family.
