Twitter and facebook are two completely different animals for me.
I connect with thousands of people on twitter, most of whom I do not know. I connect with hundreds of people on facebook. I know all but one and have only about 15 people I have not met face to face. A small percentage of the people on my facebook have become friends from twitter. They were complete strangers before twitter and I probably wouldn’t have met them without attending a twitter networking or fundraising event.
Twitter delivers my news, is a learning center and provides networking opportunities I wouldn’t have normally been included in, where I have found new friendships, alliances and personal and professional opportunities. So, it is just as it sounds, twitter is a casting net and those I have connected with on a personal and business level I have added to my facebook. I have made lifelong friends from twitter.
Facebook allows me to stay connected and reconnect and even build a better relationship with people who are closer to me than my twitter network. Facebook is a group of people I know.
Everyone has their own way of having relationships and using social media to develop business relationships or friendships. In Real Estate most people (but not all) want to do business with people they know and trust. I have found that my blog is the core of the trust, it is posted to facebook and twitter. My friends know me already and trust me. When they refer me, the referrals usually want to know something about me before they connect, so they Google me. Then they surf my site and either contact me through my contact page or they make reference to the website when they call me. 🙂
Remember each platform can only reflect a portion of who I am. There isn’t any way that someone could really show their whole self on the internet. That is done in person.
The reason to connect on the internet is to ultimately connect in person. It sometimes it isn’t a direct connection to someone it can be “someone who knows someone” which also happens in real life. Using facebook or twitter increases my exposure and the exposure of my listings…the connections and relationships come from sharing interests, meeting in real life.
If I can help you or someone you know with a real estate need, please send me an email or give me a call so we can connect. 303-995-3180

Yep – That pretty much sums it up. Developing the relationship to the point where a face to face is the next step.

Just think Tony, we were in a huge room with 300 other people at the same time but we met on twitter a month or so after that event! So glad we had twitter to connect us! I look forward to seeing you again soon!

This was very well put. People engage differently on different networks. Ultimately, I say, choose the network that best allows you to express yourself and focus on engaging with your community there. Still, your blog should always be your home base (and it sounds like it is for you). Then, the big kicker is finding those opportunities to solidify relationships by finding a way to connect off-line.
